Currency Grading Guide
Learn how condition affects the value of paper money.
Why Grading Matters
Condition is one of the biggest factors in currency value. A bill graded 'Very Fine' might be worth $50, while the same bill graded 'Gem Uncirculated' could be worth $500. Understanding grading helps you buy wisely and value your collection accurately.
The Standard Grading Scale
Currency uses a 70-point scale similar to coins. Here are the major grades and what they mean:
| Grade | Number | Description | Value Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Superb Gem CU | 67-70 | Perfect or near-perfect. Flawless. | Maximum value |
| Gem Uncirculated | 65-66 | Exceptional quality, minimal marks. | 95-98% of max |
| Choice Uncirculated | 63-64 | Above average, slight handling. | 85-92% of max |
| Uncirculated | 60-62 | No folds, but may have handling marks. | 70-80% of max |
| About Uncirculated | 50-58 | Nearly uncirculated, very light fold. | 50-65% of max |
| Extremely Fine | 40-45 | Light folds, still very crisp. | 35-45% of max |
| Very Fine | 25-35 | Several folds, attractive overall. | 20-30% of max |
| Fine | 12-15 | Many folds, still decent eye appeal. | 12-18% of max |
| Very Good | 8-10 | Well-circulated, no major damage. | 8-12% of max |
| Good | 4-6 | Heavy wear, still readable. | 5-8% of max |
| Poor/Fair | 1-3 | Damaged, torn, or barely readable. | Often face value |
