Understanding Star Note Rarity

What Are Star Notes?

Star notes are replacement bills printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) when a defective note is detected during production. Instead of a suffix letter, they feature a star (*) at the end of the serial number. Because they're printed in smaller, separate production runs, some star notes are considerably rarer than standard bills.

Very Rare
Under 640,000 notes printed. Highly sought by collectors.
Rare
640,000 to 1.28 million. Uncommon in circulation.
Uncommon
1.28 million to 3.2 million. Interesting but findable.
Common
Over 3.2 million (standard pack run). Widely available.

How to Read Your Star Note Serial Number

Every US banknote serial number starts with a single letter (A through L) that indicates which Federal Reserve Bank district the note was issued for. This is followed by 8 digits and, on star notes, a star symbol (*) at the end.

SHEET vs. PACK Star Notes

Star notes are produced as either SHEET or PACK replacements. Sheet star notes replace individual defective notes found during sheet inspection, resulting in smaller print runs (often 250,000 to 640,000). Pack star notes replace entire packs of 100 bills and are printed in larger quantities (typically 3.2 million). Sheet star notes are generally rarer and more collectible.

Tips for Star Note Collectors

Beyond rarity, several factors can increase a star note's collectible value:

Condition
Uncirculated star notes are worth significantly more than circulated ones.
Fancy Serials
Low numbers, repeaters, radars, and other patterns add premium value.
Consecutive Notes
Pairs or sequences of star notes with consecutive serial numbers are prized.
Higher Denominations
Star notes on $50 and $100 bills are printed less often and can be harder to find.
